!!!Present Simple Rules

הווה פשוט – כללים!!!

משחק מילים: למילה Rules באנגלית  יש 2 פירושים. (1) כללים (2) שולט !!! Fun Pun

I learn English every day, but right now I am eating lunch with my friends.

אני לומד אנגלית כל הזמן, אבל עכשיו אני אוכל ארוחת צהרים עם החברים שלי.

What is the Present Simple?

This is an important question because we have 3 different times that we define as the Present (Present Simple, Present Progressive, Present Perfect). We use the Present Simple when we talk about facts or hobbies.  This is often expressed when we are talking about things that we do (or don’t do) on a regular basis.  Even though we call this the Present, it is not necessarily happening at this moment. For example: I learn English every day, but right now I am eating lunch with my friends.

                 To Learn

1) I learn                      (1) We learn

2) You learn

3)   He/she/it learns      (2) They learn

NOTE: We only add an “s” to the verb in the 3rd (third) person singular (He, She, It).

שימו לב: אנחנו רק מוסיפים “S” לפועל בגוף שלישי יחיד (He, She, It ).

Simple – Simple – Present Simple !!!  פשוט – פשוט – הווה פשוט.

ES

עוד דבר קטן: יש אופנים שצריכים להוסיף “es” או “ies” בסוף הפועל בגוף 3, יחיד.  אנחנו מוסיפים “es” לפועלים שמסיימים באותיות sh, ch,x, z, ss, o

There are times when you need to add “es” or “ies” to the verbs in the 3rd person, singular.  We add an “es” to the verbs that end in  sh, ch, x, z, ss, o.

1)  Wash

Washes

שותף

2)  Watch

Watches

צופה

3)  Fix

Fixes

מתקן

4) Buzz

Buzzes

מזמזם

5) Pass

Passes

עובר/מוסר

6) Go

Goes

הולך

למה?!? מי צריך את כל זה!  זה דווקא מאד הגיוני בגלל שאם לא, יהיה כמעט בלתי אפשרי לומר את הפועל בקלותתגידו לי איך היינו אומרים washes בלי להוסיף es? זה לאיהיה הגיוני!

Why? Who needs all this? This is very logical because if not, it would be close to impossible to say the verb with ease. Tell me how would we say “washes” without adding an “es?”  It’s wouldn’t be logical!

IES

כאשר הפועל מסתיים ב y, אנחנו מורידים את ה y ומוסיפים ies. הסיבה היא בגלל שאנחנו רוצים לשמור את הצליל המקורי של הפועל.

When a verb ends in y, we drop the y and add ies.   The reason is so that we maintain the original sound of the verb.

1) Study

Studies

לומד

2)  Try

Tries

משתדל

3) Fly

Flies

טס

4) Cry

Cries

בוכה

5) Worry

Worries

דואג

                   מי צריך את זה?

.מדוע !?! הרעיון הוא שאנחנו רוצים לשמור על הצליל המקורי של המילה ואם לא היינו עושים את השינוי הזה המילה “studys” היה נשמע כמו “סטאדס” ולא סטאדייז – ( studies (ee.  מובן? “שור ברור” – sure

חשוב:  כאשר יש אות ניקוד (a, e, i, o ,u ) לפני ה y, אנחנו רק מוסיפים את האות s .   (ולא מורידים את ה y ומוסיפים ies ).

                      Who needs it?

Why !?!  The idea is that want to keep the original sound of the word and if we did not make this change than the word “studys” would sound not sound like the original “study” (ee).   Understood. Sure.

Important:  When there is a VOWEL before the y, we only add s to the verb (we do NOT drop the “y” and add “ies”).

1) Play

Plays

משחק

2) Pray

Prays

מתפלל

 3) Stay

Stays

נשאר

4) Enjoy

 Enjoys

נהנה

5) Destroy

Destroys

משמיד

איך נזכור את כל זה?!? גם כאן זה מאד הגיוני בגלל שזה מאד נדיר לראות 3 אותיות נקוד צמודים אחת לשנייה. איך היה אפשר לבטא את זה? יש בזה הגיון!

How are we going to remember all this?  Here too is very logical because it is very uncommon that a word has 3 vowels next to each other. How would we pronounce it? It is logical!

Time Expressions

ביטוי זמן

ביטויי זמן מאד עוזרים ללמוד אנגלית. הם עוזרים לנו להבדיל בין הווה (פשוט) להווה (ממושך).  כיוון שההווה פשוט עוסק בעובדות או תחביבים, הביטויי זמן משתמשים בהווה פשוט מאד הגיוני. למטה ישנם רשימה של ביטויי זמן בהווה פשוט.

Time expressions are very helpful when learning English and differentiating between the Present (simple) to the Present (progressive).  Since the Present Simple deals with facts or hobbies, the time expressions used for the Present Simple is very logical. Below are a list of time expressions in the Present Simple.

(A)  Time Expressions (beginning / end of sentence).

ביטוי זמן – שפותחים או מסיימים משפט

Every day/week/month/year…

   כל יום/שבוע/חודש/שנה

FACT – I love you!  I pick up your dirty clothes every day!

עובדה – אני אוהב אותך! אני מרים את הבגדים המלוכלכים שלך כל יום

All day/week/month/year…

כל היום/השבוע/החודש/השנה

You work all day.  You need a vacation.

אתה עובד כל היום. אתה צריך חופש

On Sunday/Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/ Thursday/Friday/Saturday

   ביום א/ב/ג/ד/ה/ו/שבת

We have dinner with all our family on Friday night.

אנחנו אוכלים ארוחת ערב עם המשפחה שלנו ביום שישי בלילה

In the summer/fall/winter/spring         בקיץ/סתיו/חורף/אביב

School begins in the end of the summer.

בית ספר מתחיל בסוף הקיץ

In the morning/noon/afternoon/ evening

  בבוקר/בצהרים/אחרי הצהרים/בערב

I exercise every morning.

אני מתאמנת כל בוקר

At night      בלילה

I go to bed at 10:00 p.m. at night.

 אני הולך לשון ב10 בלילה

(B) Time Expressions (after the subject – I, You, S/he, It, We, They)

ביטוי זמן – אחרי הנושא – (אני,אתה…) של המשפט

Always        – I always wash the dishes when I finish eating.

אני תמיד שותף כילים כאשר אני מסיים לאכול

אתה בדרך כלל ממהר לעבודה

Sometimes   – David sometimes helps me with my English.

Seldom         – We seldom wear shorts in the winter.

אנחנו בקושי הולכים עם מכנסים קצרים בחורף

Never         – They never say never.

הם אף פעם לא אומרים אף פעם

Do you have any questions?

האם יש לכם שאלות

Do / Does

יש שאלות !?!

ANY QUESTIONS !?!

אנחנו משתמשים במילים “Do” or “Does” בהווה הפשוט לשאול שאלות “כן/לא” (כמו “האם” בעברית). אנחנו משתמשים במילה “Do” עם כל הנושאים למעט גוף 3, יחיד “He, She, It”. במקרה כזה, משתמשים ב Does.

נוסחת הקסם היא:

  Do/Does  + subject + V1

כלל ברזל:  כל פעם שמשתמשים ב “Do / Does” הפועל תמיד תמיד תמיד חוזר לשורש שלו (בלי s, es, ies).

We use the words “Do” or “Does” in the Present Simple to ask “yes/no” questions.  We use “Do” with all subjects, except for the 3rd person, singular – He, She, It. In this case, we use “Does.”

The magic formula is:

Do/Does  + subject + V1

The golden rule about “Do” or “Does” is that the verb always goes back to its original form.  This means that the verb in the question will never receive an “s, es, ies.”

         To Speak   לדבר

1) Do I speak English?                    1) Do we speak English?

2) Do you speak English?

3) Does he speak English?

3) Does he speak English?              3) Do they speak English?

3) Does she speak English?

Does anyone have any questions?

האם יש למשהו שאלות

השלילה !

The Negative !

Don’t / Doesn’t

השלילה היא סופר קל בהווה הפשוט. מילת הקסם היא Don’t.  זה נכון לכל הנושאים במשפט למעט גוף שלישי, יחיד – He, She, It. במקרה כזה משתמשים ב doesn’t הקיצור של “does not“.

** כלל ברזל:  כל פעם שמשתמשים ב ” Does” הפועל תמיד תמיד תמיד חוזר לשורש שלו (בלי s, es, ies). מוכר לכם הכלל הזה נכון?

The negative is super easy in the Present Simple. The magic word is Don’t.   This is true for all the subjects in the sentence, except for the 3rd person, singular “He, She, It.”  In this case, we use the word Doesn’t.

** Golden Rule: every time you have “does, in a sentence (or question) the verb always always always goes back to its root (we do NOT add “s, es, ies”).

השלילי – Negative

1) I don’t                1) We don’t

2) You don’t

3) S/he doesn’t      3) They don’t

3) It doesn’t

                Subject + don’t/doesn’t + V1

1) I don’t want sushi.             1) We don’t want sushi

2) You don’t want sushi

3) S/he doesn’t want sushi     3) They don’t want sushi.

Remember:  Whenever “do / does” is used in a question or in the negative, the verb will always be in the V1 form.

לזכור: כל פעם שמופיע “do / does” בשאלה או במשפט שלילי, הפועל תמיד יהיה בבסיס שלו   V1.

          להבין –   To Understand

1) I don’t understand                (1) We don’t understand

2) You don’t understand

3) S/he, it doesn’t understand   (3) They don’t understand

GREAT!  Now that we understand this, I’m going to make your lives very easy.  When answering a question, we can simply answer in a short and sweet way.  Here’s how – read the questions out loud and the following reply. Note that when you hear “do” in the question, the answer will also have a “do,” and if you hear a “does” in the question, so too will the anwer have a “does.”

1) Do you understand this English lesson?

      – Yes, I do.

      – No, I don’t.

2) Does Sarah understand this lesson?

    – Yes, she does.

    – No, she doesn’t.

3) Do you speak English?

     – Yes, I do.

     – No, I don’t.

4) Does Dina love me?

     – Yes, she does.

     – No, she doesn’t.

5) Does she want to hurt me?

      – Yes, she does.

      – No, she doesn’t.

Wh/ question

Wh שאלות

שאלות wh זה הטרמינולוגיה (הביטוי) שמתייחס לכל השאלות האפשריות שאפשר לשאול באנגלית כאשר אנחנו רוצים לגלות יותר מידע.  רובם מתחילות ב Wh ולכן שמו בהתאם.

Wh/ Questions is the term which refers to all the possible questions we can ask in English when want to find out more information.  Most of them begin with Wh/.

What do you mean?

למה אתה מתכוון?

                                          Wh/  + V1  + subject  + V1

Who מי      What מה      Where  איפה   When  מתי   Why  למה  Which  איזה

How  איך    How much  כמה עולה      How many  כמה

                                     _______________________

Who – מי         – Who do you want to go out with?     ? אם מי את/ה רוצה לצאת

What – מה       – What do you want to do tonight? מה את/ה רוצה לעשות הלילה

Where – איפה  – Where does Sam live?                  ? איפה סאם גר

When -מתי      – When do they want to meet?          ? מתי הם רוצים להיפגש

Why -למה        – Why doesn’t he call me?            ? למה הוא לא מתקשר אלי

How – איך        – How do you do that?                     ? איך את/ה עושה את זה

How much – ( כמה (לא ספיר  – How much money does this cost?

      ? כמה זה עולה

How many – ( כמה (ספיר        – How many eggs do you have?

     ? כמה ביצים יש לך

*חשוב מאד, בעברית אנחנו מורידים את המילה “האם” ואז מוסיפים שאלות של “למה ולכמה…” אבל בעברית אנחנו מוסיפים את השאלה Wh בלי להוריד.

*Very important, in Hebrew we delete the word “האם” and then we add the Wh/ question, but in English we add the wh/ question without deleting.

Subject Questions

שאלות נושא

שאלות נושא הן שאלות שאנו שואלים כאשר אנו מנסים לברר מי הנושא. בשאלות אלו אנחנו לא משתמשים ב”do/does “.

What / Who + V(s)

אנו פותחים בשאלה “What או Who” ומוסיפים “s, es, ies” לפועל. אנו עושים זאת מכיוון שהמילה “What או Who” היא כמו כל “גוף שלישי, יחיד” שמוסיפים “s” לפועל. הסתכלו בכמה דוגמאות למטה.

Subject questions are questions we ask when we are trying to reveal the subject. Here we do not not use “do/does.”

What / Who + V(s)

We open with the question “What or Who” and add an “s, es, ies” to the verb. We do this because the word “What or Who” is in the “3rd person, singular” form. Below are some examples.

1) Who wants to have fun?     מי רוצה לעשות קצת כיף

I want to have fun.   אני רוצה לעשות קצת כיף

     – George doesn’t want to have fun.   ג’ורג לר רוצה לעשות כיף

2) What goes  up and down and never moves?  מה הולך למעלה ולמטה ואף לא זז

     – Stairs!  LOL      מדרגות
